Experiments that cause temperature change (Exothermic and Endothermic)

I had never heard of exothermic and endothermic reactions until I saw the blog post about it at Smaller on the Outside.(click the link to see it)

The great thing about following other homeschool blogs is that I learn new things which in turn means I get more ideas to teach!!

Coconuts

This picture was taken last summer after going to the Soulard Market.

The kidsΒ were so happy trying to drink coconut milk…

bad cocnut

… butΒ their smiles soon turned to nervous laughter as it was soon discovered that the coconut was rotten!

Yuck!! 😦

We decided to do better this year! LOL πŸ™‚

Here is a video that explains what a coconut is and how to tell if its good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjsMydOg0EM

This year my daughter picked out the perfect coconut!

The next big question was – how do you break it open??

Open it with a hammer and screwdriver

Open it with a drill (more informational)

We hadΒ  much better experience this year with our coconut πŸ™‚

DIY face cream, soap, lip balm, & sunscreen

The bathroom soap is about empty, the boys’ lips are chapped from playing in theΒ snow, and the anticipation of spring and the sun’s rays have me in the kitchen making home-made soaps, lotions, and balms!

We make almost everything because of my youngest son’s allergies.

He can’t have wheat (gluten), or ANY corn by-product!

oils

Of course… I have a few helpers!

The two older kids watched videos with me and then helped make our concoctions… my son wasn’t interested at first – till he realized its kinda fun πŸ˜‰

The first thing we made was a face cream.Β  I followed the directions in the video and LOVE it! I normally just use coconut oil as a face lotion, but I’m excited to have the addedΒ essential oils in this lotion!

Then we made foaming hand soap for our pump at home.

We also made another batch and poured itΒ into some travel size plastic bottle to keep in the car and my purse.

Sunscreen

This is so important in my family… we are very fair skinned and two of my children are red-headed!Β  We apply sunscreen liberally and often!

The video explains a simple recipe.

The next link is the recipe that we used last year and was VERY happy with!

It’s theΒ sunscreen I am making now!

This lip balm video is short with an easy recipe.Β  Ours turned out great!

I think it’s important to have children learn the art of making soaps and lotions.

I hope you enjoy making a few of these with your kiddos!

Eat your backyard!

Last summer – my daughter loved making us backyard salads.

With Spring just around the corner, I want to give them a refresher course on what they can harvest from the yard!

This lesson will involve:

  • Chickweed
  • Dandelions
  • Purslane
  • Lamb’s Quarter
  • Wild Onion

Journal pages that can be filled out with descriptions and drawings of the plants as the videos are watched.
